Galleries and Museums

The Blue Mountains are a mecca of art, handcrafts and collectibles of all descriptions. Antique furniture and jewellery, rare and old books, unique handmade items and seriously good art abound in the shops and galleries in and around Katoomba and nearby villages.

Katoomba has classic old bookshops and secondhand shops, and several nice little galleries along Lurline Street; Blackheath has a wonderful emporium of antique furniture and jewellery in the old picture theatre and a quilters' resource shop; while Leura specialises down its prettily-landscaped main street in handcrafts and art of all descriptions; and Mt Victoria is home to a wonderful antique toy shop.

A visit to the Blue Mountains must include a trip to Norman Lindsay's house, studio, garden and gallery at Faulconbridge (02) 4751 1067 www.nsw.nationaltrust.org.au. Here Lindsay, one of Australia's foremost artists and novelists, lived and worked in the early part of the twentieth century. The studio and garden are much as they were in his time, with the house being turned into a gallery of his work. Norman Lindsay holds a special place in the hearts of Australians for being the creator (author and illustrator) of the classic children's book The Magic Pudding.
