  • Jenolan Caves and Karst Conservation Reserve – these are Australia's most famous caves, and some of the world's most spectacular, now listed under World Heritage. Underground rivers, stalagmites, stalactites, huge echoing limestone caverns and over 40km of multi-level walkways make this a much-visited place. The nearby Jenolan Caves House has a bar, restaurant and café to replenish your energy after your descent to the underworld. Open every day of the year, phone (02) 6359 3311 or visit www.jenolancaves.org.au.

  • Megalong Valley – the Megalong forms most of the view as you look westward from several vantage points along the ridge. This is open country, with forested areas and wide spaces perfect for horse-riding and experiencing the 'bush' without travelling too far from the city.

  • Lithgow – from the ZigZag railway to the Small Arms Museum, Lithgow showcases engineering ingenuity. The nearby Gardens of Stone and Wollemi National Parks offer bushwalks, picnic areas and a wonderful glowworm tunnel.
